Hair Care During Stay at Home Order

Being told to stay home is the equivalent of being grounded when you were younger.  You can’t hang out with your friends; you can’t engage in hobbies, you just sit in your house and think about what you’ve done.  Or, rather in this case you sit at home to avoid contracting and/or sharing a highly infectious disease with loved ones or those that fall into the high risk category.   I’ll be honest, I never thought with all the advancements made in modern medicine (we can 3d print BODY PARTS) that we would come across a virus that could wreak such havoc in multiple countries in record breaking time.  And that we would be completely unprepared for it.

Staying A-head: Part 2.

In this busy life, we are all try to fit “one last thing” in. Avoid over scheduling yourself by knowing about how long your appointment will last!

Set your watch…

Approximately two to three months ago I wrote a post about the importance of pre-booking – ESPECIALLY for our guests who wanted in the three short weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Pre-booking is a fancy way of saying we like it when you (the guest) schedules their appointments in advance.  It ensures you get the appointment time most convenient for you and also sees you are able to see your favorite stylist (although, if you need to schedule with someone else in the salon – we are all awesome).

Side-Step the Stress

In this blog, I would like to break down appointment times a bit further.  I have come to the realization that not everyone is aware how long they are in the chair to achieve their hair dreams.  This idea came to me as a client looked at her phone whilst checking out, and exclaims she’s a half an hour late to meet a friend.  She may have thought she was running late, however she was departing right on schedule post her hour and a half color retouch appointment.

She isn’t the only guest to have this panic.  I have also had guests debate processing time with me as they overbooked their schedule for the day.  Therefore, to avoid any further confusion, I feel the need to take this opportunity to break down our most common appointments, and the time frame in which they are scheduled for.

Embracing the Introvert

I am an introvert…

This may come across as an odd statement for a hairdresser to make – especially for one that sees 60 to 90 guests within a month.  It is also a remarkable statement for one that teaches and has presented a “hair collection” to a room full of peers.  However it is a 100% factual statement. Happiness to me is when I get to spend an hour (or two or three) alone with myself.  I don’t mean to sound like a hermit and the one to three-hour thing is VERY rare, however time by myself has always been how I recharge my batteries.  It enables me to clearly think, plan and create.  Quiet alone time is also how I write these very blogs!  I have difficulty concentrating if there is bedlam and business going on around me.

Falling for a Change?

The seasons are changing…

The moment the seasons change (or that they appear to – I am recording this stream of consciousness on a first day of autumn that is reading 90 degrees) we stylists seem to be inundated with requests from clients for a brand new look.  A new look is a way to welcome in the latest temperatures, fashions and all the associated feelings with them.

Generally we see cozy rich tones and longer locks come fall, shorter lengths and lighter brighter in the spring.  Personally, I’m delighted when a guest is inspired enough to switch up there look.  This isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with staying steady, true and committed to a look, however every guest gets the seasonal “Itch” every now and again – and I’m not just speaking about allergies.

Everything Old is New Again

The saying “everything old is new again”, is nothing new.   However, the longer I’ve been on this blue marble the more I realize how completely true it is.  Flipping through nearly any magazine I see fashions that were popular when I was in high school worn by models down the catwalk.  Just as vinyl records had their resurgence several years ago, bands are now releasing cassette tapes along with digital downloads (mid 90’s boom box anyone?).

Don’t Stop Conditioning

The goal here at Salon Enso is to always have you feeling good about yourself and your hair when you leave.  Fresh color or even the tiniest of trims can elevate our spirits.  The “fresh out of the salon” feeling is a good ‘un.

Preserving that feeling and fresh hair glow will always begin with stylist suggested home care.  The first step is using the proper Aveda Shampoo and conditioner to see that your specific hair needs are met.  Whether that is hydrated, more voluminous, less frizzy or color protection, there are cleansing and conditioning options to see that your hair is cared for at home.  There is also one more not-so-secret step to at home care that we, the stylists, as well as our Aveda Representative, Renee swear by (in addition to the Aveda shampoos and conditioners) to leave our hair in its optimal health…

Here is to you, Kell Bell!

My coworkers like to tease me about my memory.  I have a knack for remembering obscure details and facts about my clients, other clients of the salon and newly formed acquaintances.  I suppose it is my own form of a pneumonic device.  I bring up my acute retention of unusual facts because when I decided on the subject matter for this month’s blog, one such instance stuck out to me above all others – a first meeting.  Late May of 2013 was my first day at Salon Enso.  I vividly remember being excited to begin a new chapter in my hairdressing life.  My first order of business was to organize my equipment.  I recall sitting on the floor, fully focused on the task at hand (I share my station, in case you didn’t know) when two feet appeared next to me.

“Hi!  I’m Kelly,” the feet said.  “I wanted to say welcome to the salon and if you have any questions or need help with anything, just ask!  I’m right over there.”  As I looked up the individual that the feet belonged to gestured to the station in the back corner and gave a big smile.  “I’m glad you are here.”

Walk the Walk on the Catwalk

Say what you want without saying a word

One of my most loved reasons for becoming a hairdresser is realizing how trans formative it can be.  Hair is truly the fashion accessory you wear daily.  It expresses what you would like to say to the world.   If you wear it long and flowing with curls, it can say fashionable, beach-y, bohemian.  Cropped says fearless.  Strands carefully slicked into place gives off a polished, groomed vibe.

Clothing has that ability as well.  It says who you are and what you wish to express to the world.  Regardless of your stance with fashion everybody (ok, almost everybody) wears clothing.  You may not be as engrossed in the world of fashion as some, but you still wear garments to cover your body.  There is the saying “dress for the job you want” and some have made it their career – blogging about what is new and in the garment world.

Charity:Water, Aveda and Global Responsibility

Our Mission, at Aveda is to care for the world we live in. From the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.

As an Aveda educator and stylist I have the above mission statement committed to memory. It adorns all the Aveda paraphernalia and is proudly displayed on the walls within Salon Enso. The mission is an impactful, true guiding principal for how Aveda (as a company) and we (as a concept salon) conduct ourselves. Since its beginnings in 1978 (in Hors Rechelbacher’s bathtub), Aveda has worked tirelessly to ensure we give back to the Earth.
